Amity Arts

2050 1231winetasting0118Amity Arts Workshop began in Amity in 1977 as a pottery studio with classes for children and adults and handmade fountains and pottery by Judy Duboff. In 1982 Judy received her Masters Degree in Art Therapy from NYU and began fulfilling her aim to help people use their own creative expression to solve issues in their lives, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, situational problems, divorce, domestic violence and anything requiring therapeutic help.  After working for many years as an art therapist for severely emotionally disturbed children and their families at Ittleson Center in Riverdale, NY, a well known residential treatment center, she opened an art therapy office in Amity Arts Workshop with an office in Goshen, NY.

In 1997, she moved her studio and practice to Rt. 17A in Florida, NY. The pottery studio occupies the basement, and the art therapy office is in the dining room of the house. The waiting room is a lovely living room, giving a homey atmosphere. The living room also works well for workshops and parties and house concerts, etc.

Amity Arts represents a relaxed, nurturing environment in which health and creativity are encouraged and fostered. Yearly pottery sales give students a venue to showcase and sell their work; sculpture classes taught by Bob Breuer and Najim Chechen give the public an opportunity to study with the areas best artist while promoting a non-competitive, collaborative spirit throughout. Judy will be offering sculpture and other special classes during the month of August.

The newest addition to Amity Arts is the healing room, which is a simple room where IGM acupressure is offered. This is a hands-on healing modality that releases stuck energy in the body’s meridians with simple finger pressure from the practitioner. Meridians are paths of energy that acupuncturists release with needles – and were used to promote health in China for many centuries. IGM acupressure, a system developed and taught by Isabell Gatto (www.therapeuticaccupressure.com ) consists of a session lasting approximately 1 hour.  The patient lies fully clothed on a massage table and listens to soothing music while 50 points all over the body are held by the practitioner until the energy begins to flow. It helps most conditions and is non invasive.
